“Support to Art Education in Primary Schools” – SAEPS – is one of 7 components in a Cultural Development Program between Vietnam and Denmark 2006-2010
The importance of creative thinking and holistic education with aesthetic elements is recognized in the Vietnamese government strategy for education, EDS 2001-2010
Arts subjects have been officially included in primary school curriculum from 2002. To support the implementation of art education at primary school level, this cultural development project SAEPS began capacity development of art teacher education at Thai Nguyen Teacher Training College and later at National University of Arts Education, Hanoi, Vietnam. SAEPS has been carried out through partnerships with University College Sealand, Denmark.
The focus of the project has been to develop
- teaching methods
- supportive teaching material
- support to in-service training at pilot schools
The partners have established a Core Art Project Team. The CAPT members have – based on practical experiences – developed pedagogical methods and teaching materials that
- are learner centered
- stimulate participation and interaction
- stimulate creative thinking
- stimulate cognitive development linked to doing
The methods and the material have been introduced to selected primary school teachers and college lecturers in Thai Nguyen, Hanoi, Nam Dinh, Dinh Bien, Hoa Binh, and Thanh Hoa. The participants in SAEPS have piloted and compiled their experiences to be presented and discussed at the National Seminar on December 6th and 7th 2010.
The outcome of this National Seminar led to an extension of SAEPS 2011-2015.
